Do patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus eat enough fruits and vegetables?

Overview

Epidemiological questionnaire study analyses the consumption of fruit and vegetables in patients with type 2 diabetes. Our data suggest that only 74.63 % of women and 50 % of men in our study consumed every day of the week fruit and only 31.34 % women and 16.22 % of men consumed every day of the week vegetables. The aim of this work is to emphasize the importance of the daily consumption of fruits and vegetables several times a day. According to the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic is a low consumption of fruits and vegetables per capita per year, compared with the recommended dose, also in comparison with consumption per capita per years in other European Union member states. Therefore, we are recommended for patient education to consume 200 grams of fresh raw or steamed vegetables for breakfast, lunch and dinner and fruit at 1 piece for a snack, afternoon snack and second dinner.
